The “Where’s My Bag?” series highlights Clark & Mayfield bags in interesting locations around the world. This is a guest post by Michelle C. of IntentionalTravelers.com from her recent travels to Colombia. Michelle and her husband are "digital nomads," running their business online as they travel. Michelle shares about some of the destinations she's visited with her Clark & Mayfield bag in tow.

Medellín, Colombia

Colombia's reputation is tainted by a violent past. Today, however, this lush South American country looks much different than the dangerous impression left by news headlines of the 1990's. Colombia has truly turned itself around and is actually becoming an increasingly popular destination for young entrepreneurs, expats, and tourists.

Medellín is a beautiful city in the mountainous coffee-growing region that was recently recognized as one of the world's most innovative cities. This hub of entrepreneurship is full of cafes, diverse restaurants, parks, gyms, and one of the cleanest metro systems you'll ever lay eyes on.

Every Sunday morning, major thoroughfares are closed off to traffic and thousands of locals come out to ride bicycles, jog, walk, and enjoy the roadside juice stands with their friends along the various "Ciclovia" routes.

Colombians are delighted to see foreign visitors, which is a confirmation of their progress and changing reputation as a country. Tourism is still relatively new there so it still feels "off the beaten path." In fact, don't be surprised if locals have lots of questions for you, or even walk up and thank you for coming to visit.

Why We Went

In addition to visiting friends and house-sitting in different places, my husband and I also like to find new places where we can work from abroad for several weeks at a time. In Medellín, we rented a cute Airbnb apartment with kitchen and good internet.

Medellín is an ideal city for "digital nomads" like us because it has all the amenities you might want - decent internet, diverse places to eat, movie theaters, health care, hiking, public transit - and all for very affordable prices. For South America, it's really quite a developed city. Not to mention, the people are friendly and it's a great place to practice Spanish!
